3 Days in Cornwall {England Trip Part 3}

After a lovely breakfast in Dorset, we started our drive to Cornwall. On the way, we drove through Dartmoor National Park, which is known for it's wild horses and Sherlock's Hound of the Baskervilles. When we were there, it was far from moody though!

We couldn't stay long though because we still had to drive a bit more to arrive at our home for the next few days - St. Mawes! We stayed at the St. Mawes Hotel in a "seaview" room and it was really a treat. That night we were able to eat a yummy dinner at our hotel and head to the local COOP for some wine/snacks. We took it easy that evening, watching some Game of Thrones and New Girl!

The next morning, we had breakfast at our hotel and then drove over to Camel Valley Vineyards for some sparkling wine tastings. It is considered to be one of the best vineyards in England and it was REALLY delicious! Sparkling wine is always a great way to start the morning.

After, we drove to Tintagel Castle. This is really where history meets legend – combining the ruins of a Dark Age castle with the mythical stories of King Arthur. Legend has it that this was where Arthur was conceived! We even got to take a walk through Merlin's Cave. I do love me some Pendragon stories, so it was fun to nerd out for a while! Even if you don't believe that, it's still worth making the trip for the views alone.

Part of what makes Tintagel so special is its location. It’s almost an island, just joined onto the mainland by a narrow neck of land.  You can see why it would make a good fortress! Not much of the castle is still standing, but there are many excavation sites around.

After hiking around, we were hungry and we'd heard we couldn't leave Cornwall without trying a pasty! I had the Thai Chicken and Jason went with a Bacon Leek. YUM!

Driving to a nearby spot, we did another hike to St. Nectan's Glen. This was a fun hike that led to a visitor's center. Paying a little fee, you are allowed to rent their wellies (much needed as it was SUPER muddy). The waterfalls were really beautiful and peaceful. Glad we did this hike - all in all, it probably took about 2 hours.

That night, we walked to a little hole in the wall (literally) called The Watch House to order takeaway fish and chips. These were the BEST I'd ever had! We even came back here the next evening because we liked them so much! I went with the crab cakes on night 2, but still incredibly delicious!

The next morning it was dreary - and we were pretty disappointed to be honest! We had plans to go to St. Michael's Mount and the views were...less than spectacular. It was still fun to walk along the cobblestone bridge to get to the island.

We walked around the island, but didn't figure it was worth it to explore the castle since views were non-existent! We BARELY made it back before the tide came in, soaking our feet!

Driving further south, we stopped for lunch at Rock Pool Cafe in Mousehole. I stole the first shot from google to show how amazing the views WOULD have been, alas, it wasn't meant to be. We had a cozy cup of tea and a slice of cake before exploring the town a bit more.

We ended our day walking down to Porthcurno Beach. It was fun to watch the locals surf with the seals for a while!

Even though our last day was a little dreary, we still greatly enjoyed our time in Cornwall!

Up Next: London (and a recap of our Harry Potter Studio Tour!)
