Iceland: South Coast

Our third day in Iceland was a doozy - tons of activities planned and also tons of driving! Luckily we had podcasts and some pretty amazing views to occupy us. Literally every 30 minutes, we had a different landscape. I've tried to include some pictures of each different type, but nothing can prepare you for the sheer SIZE of everything here.

Our morning started with a drive to Skogafoss, which was probably my favorite waterfall we saw. Although as you can see in the photos, there are little mini waterfalls everywhere!

Continuing our drive, we went from green to black pretty fast. After that, we started seeing the glaciers! That's when we knew we were getting close to Jokulsarlon. This is a glacial lagoon, that is filled with icebergs from the Vatnajokull Glacier.

We had booked a tour on a zodiac boat - this boat went faster than the more common tours and we were able to see much more this way. We looked like marshmallows in our gear, but we never got cold!

Continuing our drive east, we stopped by Diamond Beach, where some of the glaciers end up on their journey to the ocean. After that, we caught up with another tour - this time for snowmobiling!

The drive up was insane - we were in a gigantic 4-wheel drive truck that was absolutely needed. Once we got to the top, the weather wasn't that great, so we couldn't see that much. It didn't dampen our spirits too much because we both got to take turns driving! When we reached the end of the glacier, we got to see just how close to the end and high up we were - would have been amazing on a clear day, but we still had tons of fun.

We had a LONG drive back that evening and we were luckily able to find a convenience store open to grab a, quick dinner that night.

Also, word of warning - most gas stations there don't accept US cards. We had to go inside to buy a loaded up gas card which works on the machines outside. But if you're driving late at night, the inside stores aren't open after 10pm and you might be out of luck!

It was around midnight that we arrived at the Black Sand Beach (or Reynisfyara), but with the midnight sun, you could hardly tell. There were probably 10 other people wandering around the beach, which is normal packed with people. It was surreal to experience it at night!

Our last morning, we grabbed breakfast and started our drive back to Reykjavik. We stopped to walk around Seljalandsfoss (literally, you can walk behind it) and also another "hidden" waterfall that is maybe a 20 minutes walk further. If you're interested, follow the signs to the left towards Gljufrabui. You do have to wade through some ankle-high water, so be prepared!

The best thing I can say is to bring waterproof everything when visiting Iceland. It would suck to miss out on some of the more unique sights because you're avoiding the water!

And lastly, you can't go to Iceland without trying a gas station hot dog! So when we stopped to fill up our rental car, we grabbed 2 and an order of fries for about $40. I wasn't joking when I said Iceland was expensive guys!

We got to the airport early...because WOW Air...and had time to have a couple of mimosas before our flight. And about our flight. Maybe don't fly WOW Air guys. About an hour in, the water from the toilets literally started overflowing down the center aisles. Luckily we were on a side aisle, but that didn't help the smell. They said it was fresh water, but it sure didn't smell like that. The pilot literally had to come and turn off the water supply. Add that to the 2 hour delay? YIKES.

The rest of our trip was lovely and we can't wait to go back to Iceland to explore the West Fjords and the North.

Up Next: To wrap-up our catch-up posts, I'll post some highlights from our week-long trip from Texas to California!

Iceland: Reykjavik & The Golden Circle

So it's been a bit since our last update! Our life got crazy with the selling of the house, move, finding a new place, Jason starting a new job...just to name a few. The amazing news is that we have a place to live here in California and our stuff gets delivered out of storage this week!

It feels like ages ago that we were in Iceland, but it was less than 2 month ago. I definitely don't want to forget a moment of our time there, so here we are! I'm going to break up our posts into two posts - one showing how we'd spend our time if we only had a few days (or a long layover) and the next showing the rest of the things we loved in our 4 days there.

Most flights into Iceland arrive early in the morning into Reykjavik. Our first stop was duty free in the airport and then we made our way to the Blue Lagoon (which opens at 7am). I would 100% recommend this. It's only 20 minutes from the airport and since we went so early, it was pretty empty! We just got the cheapest "comfort" package which includes a towel, locker, face mask, and a drink from the swim up bar.

I know this place gets a ton of hype, but we loved it. Maybe it was because we went early, but it was super relaxing and peaceful. It's large enough that you really can swim over to a secluded spot. Here's a tip though - use LOTS of conditioner in your hair and leave it on. The water apparently makes your hair feel horrible - we were able to avoid that and now you can too!

After relaxing for a few hours, we drove into the City. Ok, actually, we had to get our car jumped by a cab first because the rental place had left the lights permanently on and we didn't realize! But then we headed in! We grabbed lunch and explored a bit. First, we climbed to the top of Hallgrimskirkja, got coffee from Reykjavik Roasters and then headed to our hotel room to freshen up before dinner.

That evening, we had one of the best meals of our lives at Seafood Grill. We started with salmon sashimi, Jason had the fish of the day, and I got the salted cod. It was honestly incredibly simple food, but prepared in the most amazing ways. Please go here, but make reservations! After dinner, we stopped by the Harpa Concert Hall and the Sky Voyager statue before calling it a night.

We stopped at Sandholt Bakery to grab picnic lunch supplies before we drove out of the city. The Golden Circle can be driven in one day, whether you want to do a tour or drive it on your own. We had a rental car and we always enjoy doing things at our own pace, so we drove it.

There are 3 "main" stops on the Golden Circle - Ãžingvellir National Park, Stokkur Geysir, and Gullfoss. You can add on tons of stops though, so the options are endless. We stopped at all of the above and added on Kerid crater and Skaholt. It was a perfect, but long, day!

Up Next: Our tour of the South Coast of Iceland!

We're Off To: Iceland!

Iceland wasn't really planned this year, but we saw a nonstop fare deal that we just couldn't pass up - less than $400/person! And since Iceland has been very high on our wish list for a while, it was just perfect timing. It's our first experience on WOW Air, but we're prepared with plenty of water, snacks, and downloaded movies for our 7 hour nonstop "no frills" flight.

We'll get to explore both Reykjavik and the South Coast. We'll be checking out the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle, taking a zodiac boat around a glacier lagoon, and snowmobiling on a glacier. We will also get to experience the midnight sun. It's going to a wild 5 days! Hoping we still have some money left over when this trip is over - Iceland is CRAZY expensive!

In other news...

This will also be our first "post-Southwest Airlines" trip. If you haven't heard, Jason accepted a job at Facebook and starts mid July, so we'll be packing up shortly after Iceland to move to California. We are SO excited about this move, but are obviously sad to leave our friends and family in Texas. The Bay Area is one of my favorite places and we can't wait to explore California.

Since we have the pup, we'll be road-tripping it from Texas to the Bay Area, so the recaps of our trips may be a bit delayed. Also, the blog will continue so we can document our California adventures and other international trips as well, but it will definitely need a new name - recommendations welcomed! :)
